When I was a kid, I wanted to be a rockstar, so I started writing music. In 1994 I put together a band called bicycle. My band released an album on Capricorn records that made it onto the list of the Huffington Post's most underrated albums of the 1990s.
In 2001 I broke up my band and started painting. I really love being a painter. I get to be creative the whole time I’m doing it. When you’re writing songs you get to be really creative at first, but after that initial burst you have to rehearse your songs over and over again so you can play them exactly the same way night after night. Forever.
Painting is so much different than writing songs. Painters don’t ever have to paint the same painting twice. No drunk Italian has ever yelled at a painter to. “Paint it again Leonardo! Do the Mona Lisa!”
Visual artists paint it once and then if they’re lucky enough to sell their art, they never have to see it again as long as they live.
